Developed within Speedo's Aqualab, Fastskin fabric is exclusive to Speedo and is
based on a shark's skin. Speedo Fastskin has been developed using biomimetrics -
the extraction of good design from nature. Through a combination of fabric
panels and unique seaming , Fastskin increases coordination of muscles and
moulds to the body like a second skin, it is engineered for performance. Seams
and fabrics are positioned to maximise the flow of water around the body to
reduce drag. Super stretch thread allows greater comfort and freedom of
movement.
Fastskin FS11 uses 2 different fabrics - Fastskin and Flexskin - to
accommodate different flow characteristics across the body and reduce drag
through the water, this results in a decrease of 4% in drag compared to the
original Fastskin.
Athlete passive drag tests show Fastskin full-body suit is
7.5% faster than all suits tested, in water velocity 2m/s. Fabric tests also
show Fastskin has a 3% lower surface resistance than Speedo Aquablade. The
secret of the shark's speed is mimicked in the V shaped ridges and denticle
print of the fabric, this allows the body to slip through the water more
smoothly.
