The purpose of the Starter Sleeve is to help timers and runners see the gun when it is fired. Starters in big championship meets may wear jackets or sleeved shirts that are bright red for the same reason. It is no help if the sleeve is not on the gun arm.
Be sure the sleeve is changed to the gun arm whenever you change hands for firing the gun on starting. The timers will often observe that your sleeved hand (with the gun) has been raised to halfway or three quarters upward along with the first start command. As you give the "Set" command the gun should be raised higher, not necessarily straight overhead and within about a second or three fire the gun. The sleeve helps timers and runners be ready for the flash and bang which is the start. If at any time you direct the runners to stand up to avoid a false start or any other reason to stop the process, drop the gun hand at least halfway down signal a delay or all the way down if problem deserves more attention. Always start again from the beginning or if only halfway lowered command "SET" again to restart the rhythm. It takes practice to get used to it.
